This review deals with the Nokia N95 “mobile phone with Symbian S60 operating system and the Vodafone 120 Weekend Treaty. In conjunction with other mobile-contracts, and possibly operating system versions may lead to differences which I do not consider in this review can. The appendix includes some of the most important specifications that you can also check on the Nokia website (www.nokia.com) / should if my review has made you curious.

A mobile phone, what is that?

A “Handy” has usually the function to be able to make calls wirelessly. These usually come functions, shorten the phone manufacturers like with “PIM”. Advertised called the “Personal Information Manager”, which means “Personal data manager” and means nothing more than adding a small diary, notepad, address book, etc. in the phone memory has digitally.

You can also SMS and MMS for some time, in the WAP browsing (which is something like a “mini-Internet” for mobile phones), play a few games to while away the time and listening to you saved on the phone or downloaded has. Sometimes a radio function installed with which one can receive shortwave transmitter. Often a more or less decent digital camera with more or less tolerable Zoom is installed you can use to hold some necessary situations figuratively.

That was at least as to the Nokia N95 in the world market for mobile phones and placed so that, at least in my opinion, has invented the mobile phone actually new – according to Steve Jobs, it has indeed done with the Apple “iPhone”, but even if I guess Apple Computer , the iPhone is against the N95 is a better MP3 player.

Nokia has learned everything the company over the years in which it has influenced the mobile phone market crucial to have processed in this mobile phone. Besides the usual features that have improved much in this device, it is almost a full-fledged communicator of full-Fi and GSM networks, Internet, offers a GPS receiver with navigation software, a pocket computer with multiple and expandable office functions, a 5-megapixel digital camera (for mobile phones) outstanding fixed focal length with good intensity, and more.

The whole thing you put in an attractive cabinet with valuable processing, which houses a dual slider. A “Slider” is a mobile phone design in which one of the “cover” of a cell phone normally the screen push away includes in one direction can get to get access to the keyboard, a “double slider” you can defer into two different directions, at either the keyboard or a second panel to bring to light. can the screen is a 2.6 inch screen in 4:3 format with 16.7 million colors to either look at the “normal” size upright or turn into wide format. Together with the remaining features results in a performance of the previous mobile phones in the shade.

Design / Processing
The outside design is 90% plastic, feels not like it. Plastic, if it is reasonably high, has the advantage over metal that absorbs shock and is not deformed so easily. It is much easier and can be put in simple form. A disadvantage is that corners and edges with no “through-wear” plastic strain at some point and that can be hard to break the plastic.

Since the N95 is a pocket computer with sensitive electronics, the better one anyway should not drop the choice of plastic in the design of the outer shell is good. The case makes a strong impression, not crunches the grip and is only 120 grams, about as heavy as a bar of chocolate with packaging. Front and back are processed in two different types of plastic, the front side is a metallic-silver smooth plastic of the phone with an elegant appearance, the back is made from a purple plastic that is essentially “blunt” to the touch and very good in the hand lies.

The housing has two Digitalkameraobjektive, one on the front and one on the back. The front sensor is designed for video calling and resolve 640×480 pixels on rear while the lens is protected by a sliding mechanism behind the dissolving of the 5-megapixel sensor. The sliding mechanism is not simply a flap, as with most camera phones, such as with SonyEricsson but a “curtain” with two parts that are postponed in opposite directions.

The rear lens has a steel frame, the slide is made of steel (as far as I can determine without material analysis), which were the only metal parts that are visible from the outside. The display is as described above 2.6 inches in size, solve 320×240 pixels (QVGA) at the 4:3 format and provides up to 16.7 million colors. In words, it is quite large and has a good image quality. The angle at which one can still see everything very well I would appreciate to 45 degrees. More would not be good because many people do not appreciate so much if their neighbor can watch them when writing SMS.

Under the screen there is a keypad with 13 keys with which one can navigate even when the “Slider” through menus, etc. after you have removed the key lock with a key combination. With these buttons you can perform all the functions of the N95 requiring it not to write. 2 speed dial, one for the main menu, while others allow for a special media menu quick access to all functions.

At the top there is the round on / off button with which you can set the profile functions. The double slider “itself sits quite rigid on the rest of the phone and opens his fill and quickly as a stable sliding in both directions. Up there, he pushed the keyboard free (standard 12-key phone keypad). If one of the N95 turns to the side and pushes the “Slider” in the other direction, it is the view of four music hot keys (Play / Pause, Stop, Forward, Backward) is free and the image on the display rotates from portrait to landscape.

This goes fairly smoothly, although the N95 for a mobile phone quite cumbersome. One should not expect any speed records when a couple of times quickly from landscape to portrait mode and play-back, changes in the everyday life but a minor role.

On the left is the infrared port, a speaker, the Micro-SD card slot and a 3.5 mm jack output. The right side offers a second Speakers, a double button for scrolling and volume control, a key to video and the release button for the 5-megapixel camera. The top offers as already mentioned the “On / Off” button, the bottom has the adapter for the Nokia power connector, microphone, mini-USB port and an eyelet for the nonsense that is also called “cell phone jewelry.

Mobile phone camera to the front and rear is a separate LED for illuminating the rear with LED are significantly larger and more powerful. The battery compartment on the back, you can delay when you hold down the lock button, behind it is also the slot for the SIM card. Interestingly the design is that the usual Nokia “PopPort” connection no longer required. This is quite enjoyable as verdrecken these contacts you and the phone is so open to more general standards such as USB and 3,5 mm jack.

Overall, everything is running stable. The display is designed to be slightly recessed into the case so that it is protected from scratches. Inside was processed at the sliding metal and in any case the whole cell phone makes a thoughtful and ergonomic feel. Overall, the design is “excellent” and the processing of “very good”!
Facilities / menu

I use the Nokia N95 with the Nokia SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard (a folding QWERTY keyboard) run as a replacement for the already almost microbially little Powerbook G4 12 “for Office applications to leave. I put the display to landscape and put the cell phone to the holder of the keyboard, so you can read prima taking notes a whole lecture and the stuff then home. keyboard and mobile fit into the pockets of cargo pants.

This is needed, however, the premium version of the already pre-installed “Quick Office” package, with the Although you can display can be MS-Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, edit them so that you can not, however. The Premier version has cost me 22 €, now you can also create and edit new files and. This is the Office solution for the Gadgeteer.

The pre-installed office suite also includes a program for notes, a voice recorder, a viewing program for Adobe PDF, a normal calculator, currency converter, one zip compression program and a bar code reader. The latter is a fun add-on program the use of large digital bar codes on packaging, magazines, etc. reads and decodes. Usually there are only figures out who the seller wants to scribble in the supermarket, however, love messages on Tetra Pack comes to this little tool is a must.

Additional programs such as the video program of the company “Real” (has nothing to do with Madrid), the Flash player from Adobe (for Internet animation), the radio program with many additional functions (Visual Radio) as well as the program “Life Blog” and the game “Snakes” Kurzweil offer in between. With the Real Player video stream can be received via the mobile phone network.

Vodafone is one e.g. CNN to the free program that can be received anywhere where there is a fairly powerful radio network. The radio function can only use with a connected headset cable, which serves as an antenna. Visual Radio is a radio service in Germany is the Nokia is about to establish. Until now, it is only RadioFFM receive these additional functions uA to allow feedback from the radio listeners. “Life Blog” takes pictures and short messages which are written with the phone, made, received, etc., together in a kind of “mobile dairy”.

Thus it is easy for example to put certain images in a temporal context or SMS text messages over several entertainment to follow content. The game “Snakes to declare” I can save me now, it’s just a reaction play. Videos, Photos and music can be on a media management program select to manage comfortably. Music is sorted by artist, albums, individual play lists, composer or music. Played alongside MP3 and AAC files are that you could know from the Apple music store.

The program also keeps track of the files on memory card installed and updated at each synchronization. The music program shows pretty clearly the title, artist and album – even the album cover is the place. The File Manager is a program that all files on mobile and removable storage management and makes no distinction between media files, eBooks, PDF documents and office files. You can use it to copy any between the card in the phone’s internal memory, move and delete.

By the way: a supplied video cable makes it possible to transfer audio and video on a TV or a stereo or a digital receiver. As a memory card format Nokia uses TransFlash cards up to 2GB size. A 512MB card is included with the phone is stored on the navigation with the map of Germany.

The Internet functions include, in addition to writing e-mails with attachments and surfing in a vollwerigen Internet via 3G connection or Wi-Fi Access Point. Unfortunately you can not configure VPN tunnels, so that on such corporate networks to the Internet is configured. The presentation of the websites on the 2.6 inch display is in landscape mode best.

You navigate with the directional pad on the pages back and forth, simultaneously operates the control pad move the cursor to click on links you to. Is written with the cell phone keypad or even a Bluetooth keyboard. So you can quickly do a comparison between the Internet or go to a coffee shop with open wireless access point and surf the Internet in his favorite websites.

In the address book can be summarized as contacts into groups and each contact data from the business phone number, the alias name, the mail address, pager number, and everything else imaginable (and an additional note) to add. The Address Book can sync with Outlook. Since I own a Mac but I was pretty disappointed that the synchronization was not working there. Meanwhile, Nokia has released a plugin for iSync, however, and a media management application for the Mac. The media management software, however, is a beta and still does not work as smoothly as it would like.

However, can now sync appointments from iCal and the entire address book, of course, with pictures and all relevant contact information stored. About MS-Outlook can synchronize the calendar, had not harmed the other functions such as a schedule function.

Here it is unfortunately only four categories under which you can save entries: Meeting, Jahres-/Geburtstag, notes and tasks. One could of course reduce all appointments to these four categories, to me it would be nice if you could edit this category.

The dates may be adjusted by an alarm function so you miss nothing. Practical is that the next upcoming appointment and the dates on the current day immediately on the main screen when you bring the phone out of standby mode appear. The clock function provides an attractive analog clock for the upper left corner of the screen, an extensive alarm and alarm with configurable profiles for weekdays, repeated awakening, etc., and a world clock.

In the system configuration file if the Symbian S60 3rd Edition operating system to set all sorts, but it is a bit of “wild time”. Others would describe the design as “modular”, whereby many small little program features such as connections, memory, profiles, Bluetooth etc. control. You have to be switching from SonyEricsson definitely a little used to it after a few days there but pretty good.

Here now an explicit warning from Vodafone:
Access to Vodafone’s Live portal is extremely simple and the phone displays a connection established only as a small icon that you can make bad and different from other symbols such as “dead connection”. Last month I had 17 € by internet to my account which I had never selected. They have simply set their own. Only through a reconfiguration of the set of factory options I have to hold the phone like this can always keep a little door open to Vodafone. But this is not a problem of Vodafone and Nokia.

When V800 from Motorola, I had a similar problem. If one of them knows it is easy to avoid, and since then everything is okay with the bill, however, are the basic configurations to incorporate not necessarily criticism. Very pleased I was with the way my phone from Vodafone online store to synchronize it to the new mobile synchronization protocols because of Nokia and SonyEricsson are only partially compatible. About the Vodafone portal but it works fine.

The Symbian S60 OS is its modular design very suitable for expansion of all kinds, as we see in the office suite. In operation, it is also very stable. At the beginning it is my crashed one single time where the phone had to be restarted, after which there was no more problems. If you need a scientific calculator, looking for a viewing program for exotic files or a dictionary or just want to load new games does Symbian S60 pretty good expansion options and a comprehensive software market. The menu navigation and software equipment do I rate in this part of the section with “good”.

GPS Receivers

“Why do I need it?” you may ask when you see it on the equipment note. Who has Schonmal run in a strange city, knows what he may need a GPS. The GPS receiver is quite weak and only works under the open sky, ie up by a car window with vertical clear view in the sky. Once the roof intervenes does the GPS not good. Under the open sky, but the location can be on 50-10 meters to determine exactly. This is very handy if you get lost in a strange city or just want to find my way to the next station or to a specific address.

Route finding is contained in the GPS package also a good map of Germany. Voice guidance is not included, however, including? In the car, the GPS works much worse and on foot, it makes more sense to look at the map. You can mark points on the map to facilitate the recovery and storage. The GPS receiver is located under the mobile phone keypad, which means that it works better when folded out as a mobile phone is closed, the total you will get a good performance when one considers the data from Nokia. the GPS program communicates with the Internet when you can and it shows in addition to interesting locations on the map, which is constantly updated. Beautiful it if you could display each other, then one could simply his child would be a part in the pants and sew it again in turmoil.
5-megapixel camera

The integrated digital camera has a Zeiss Tessar lens with an aperture of 2.8 which can be hochregeln in good light at 5.6. It has no zoom, but I needed a digital clip hot camera never one or wanted, it is simply unnecessary for photos of friends, some quick photos or documentation makeshift Repro recordings to which you need just the wide angle. So it is very good that Nokia has been careful to process a lens with high light intensity.

This lens also focuses quite fast and the sensor also has an acceptable shutter lag. The performance of chip-lens combination can be compared even with the performance of commercially available digital cameras. The images can be in any case to 10×15, I would even say A4 photo paper print without having them look at their mobile home immediately. The sensor is naturally quite small and not a “super CCD” by Fuji, but such jokes, I do not expect in a mobile phone, just make a few good snapshots and will always be there.

For everything else I have the SLR anyway, so what? be subject programs and a different flash modes and exposure compensation, white balance and ISO sensitivity control (on automatics!) Nokia has just begepackt. A self-timer is not missing as well. Can turn on the camera directly above the slide switch on the back of the case, which performs a slight bow. For example, pushes the housing cap is not on when you push the phone into a pocket. The camera also takes videos in 640×480 pixel quality and image sequences.

Photos are stored as JPG files, videos in MP4 or 3GP format. On a 2GB memory card fit, according to memory specification over 4000 high quality graphics (with JPG compression does of course always a matter if you shoot a white wall or a subject with many colors and patterns), that is more than enough room for music and other files . The camera and GPS receivers are doing their bit to ensure that the phone a whole, the highest grade “excellent” enters the total equipment category.

Reception / sound

The reception quality can generally be as “seen” award. Even underground, under concrete it has often still at least one bar reception, unless strong jammers or magnetic fields are in the environment (for example, a magnetic resonance imaging). Vodafone also has a very good network. When I was at ePlus customer, I had all the long noses a radio hole in the middle of one of the most densely populated regions in Germany (okay, that’s 4 years ago). Disturbances may actually be no question, run the phone calls either good or not (if there is no reception), from disturbances in the transmission or reception, I can not tell for now. In the Vodafone network do I call 100% smoothly, talking to O2 there was once a failure, however, was guaranteed by the transmission of the language of my interlocutor.

The speaker stereo sound to be if you wish. Music from WAV, MP3, AAC and MIDI files can be configured as ring tones if not a pre-installed shawms the rich supply of Nokia sufficient. Mobile phone ringtone Cowboys have since determined their bright happy about it because a certain three-dimensionality of the sound output will be ensured by simple sound effects – but it is thankfully not a Bose sound system or something of that nature I’m a listen sorry for young people on buses and trains need to while they can blare out music loudly from their mobile phone.

With the Nokia N95 it is unfortunately possible to really listen to VERY audible music, the highest volume brings himself back stubborn sleepers from the realm of dreams, even where the cell phone under some clothes mountain. The device has the deserved two additional speakers. The transfer of a phone call to the speaker (Lautsprecheinrichtung) works very well, as the microphone is very sensitive to the voice. Once again, a top grades, “very good” for the sound and the reception quality is “excellent”.

Comfort / Battery

Since this is a kind of pocket computer I give a tip in advance: Use pure for the phone features a Bluetooth headset or the supplied headset remote control and voice control. Both worked very well and they can leave the N95 in your pocket. Although there is lightweight and compact for the wealth of its functions, it is larger than many other phones. I wear it mostly in an envelope in the pocket or the lower cargo pocket and it rauszufingern always there and from the casing to squeeze takes too long if you want to answer a call. The battery life of the 950mAh battery is actually pretty good with swallow but the extra features of cell phones a lot of energy.

One would prevent the phone it constantly for open wireless networks to seek and to set the WAP so that it dials on demand only, so you can even save some energy. Camera and GPS are another major power guzzler, just playing music. However, making the cell phone is not so easily tired. GPS navigation, photos, and listening to work with a full battery for several hours, ie a long stroll through town in a foreign country is no obstacle.

The charger is compact and is pleasing even in the pocket space what other manufacturers of the chargers can not say absolutely. The standby time is specified in GSM networks with the equivalent of about 10 days, which I can not so sign intact, perhaps with very lower power functions. 5 days should however, without problems with Wi-Fi and WAP search be there. I rate the comfort therefore “good” and the battery life I guess for “a long”.

Manual

The manual contains everything about the implemented features of the Nokia N95. Vodafone has since some costs falling, uh, ‘come up with interesting additional features “that are not naturally described in the manual. For questions about connections and all daily and non-daily helps a Einstellungskram the manual, although the illustrated fairly sparse, but well localized was pretty fast on.

As expected, the manual for the Nokia N95 is pretty thick. Sometimes I would have liked a little more explanation but I actually quite a lot of experience with mobile phones have hit me pretty rare even for (and then of course there are very specific things I would have explained very well). To get along well and it is enough but the manual is not overloaded, after all it is not a course in mobile phone design. The manual I rate it as “simple and clear,” the second best rating.
Price

The Nokia N95 costs to a UMTS-120-minute contract with Vodafone € 449 with contract extension. This is a very nice chunk of money on such a phone and it is quite sensitive because of the massively used electronics can not describe it more as a “toy”. I was sorry to have ever so much stuff in his pockets. Organizer, camera, cell phone, MP3 player, all that I sold and now I only have one device that fulfills these functions more than passable.

Currently the phone is not yet widely available. I had massive fortune since I got it on day of issue at a Vodafone seller actually bought unplanned. I was surprised that he had just one stock, as well as some other people from my area that had a pre-ordered and still not keep these devices in their hands. Who needs this phone? Actually no one and all. Who an MP3 player or a camera or a GPS device has can be satisfied because these devices are ideal for fulfilling these tasks. Who wants to have it all in a small plastic box that is always and everywhere, and these features combined purchases sensationally well the N95, which in my opinion, best international cell phone with the richest features with minimum dimensions.
Reviews

Here are a few tricks I have found out in dealing with the N95 until now. As already mentioned, you should configure the link services are not restrictive to the box dials all long noses into any 3G network. Although the WAP use at Vodafone Live! Portal is free it may be that you suddenly through some bookmarks are in the paid area, and then it gets expensive. This chapter should be read in the manual carefully, especially pages 150 / 151 and packet data connection, “If necessary, adjust.”

Until now, there is no exact matching case for the N95. By the term “mobile phone bag” I defend myself somehow, that sounds strange for me. One can plug into the N95, however well-CP141 universal cover. However, there was so much to build the 3.5 mm audio output. It is entirely possible, with a hole punch accurately punching a hole too close to the Nahtwulst and durchzustecken the plug there.

Problem solved. Elegant is of course a Bluetooth headset, such as the BH-500 which I know to report only positive. The bag I have now been replaced by a Plug-in plastic cover of a third party. The positive thing is one part of the price (3 €), the other one can still use all the features through holes (including the dual slider function is available because the cover consists of 2 parts) and the phone is well protected from scratches and bumps. Such cell phone cover can be obtained in almost any Internet-phone shop.

As mentioned, the Bluetooth QWERTY Keyboard SU-8W works fine with the N95. This is a real purchase tip from me as I (except SMS) almost exclusively with the large keyboard writing. With the premium Office suite can be good simply taking notes at meetings, lectures, everything. If you do not buy the program office would also sufficient notice function of the N95. Even surfing the Internet, the keyboard is good. Who writes rarely need the keyboard, of course.

A note for fans of internet photo forums: The configuration of picture uploads is not as easy as it would like. The first steps can be carried out also on the PC at home. First and foremost one needs an online account, I present here the example of the “Flickr (www.flickr.com before). To create a Flickr account can you need a Yahoo ID. This ID is now created a Flickr account if you have not yet.

There is logging you then accept one (preferably the cookie that you want to stay logged in). Now you go to the address “http://www.flickr.com/nokia/configure/n95/” and follow the instructions. There you will get (unless you are logged when you enter the URL) and an extra password and a user name because the user name and password for the mobile upload differ from the corresponding user name / password combination from the PC.

For friends of the function now lists the list with the following features details of the N95 you can find it on the Nokia website. For the following statements I do not think my hand into the fire, but the people of Nokia’s have to know so …
