Delivery / commissioning
The delivery includes, inter alia, a USB data cable, stereo headset, charger and Nokia PC Suite CD. Actually everything you need so, except a MicroSD memory card. This is, however, e.g. with a size of 1 GB of including SanDisk for 10 €, so no problem, resulting in more expensive mobile phones.
Start-up is really simple. Simply insert the SIM card, plug in the battery and restart phone. After entering the PIN have been relatively fast (10 seconds) for a Symbian mobile phone access to the main screen. For comparison, my previous Nokia N73 still needed up to 40 seconds.
Who knows Nokia, comes on the phone from anything foreign. Only the main menu button is a little has been added. Otherwise, everything works thanks to a 5-way control and the unusually large buttons to operate properly.
Synchronization
At each beginning of a new mobile phone is constantly faces the problem of how do I get my contact from the old wireless phone to the new. This time, this was no problem for me. For my previous phone was a Nokia N73, also with the Symbian software 3rd Generation and in conjunction with Nokia PC Suite worked the synchronization of all contact and calendar data in a very fixed 5 seconds.
Then we turned on the Nokia 6290 eigebauten Update Wizard and can with this very practical program without much twiddling or spec. Port address, his e-mail accounts, Internet access and set the MMS Opti cannon.
e.g. If you need to e-mail configuration, only his e-mail address, password and user name, nothing more.
Service
The keyboard is similar to the Motorola Razr inserted almost as in the case. However, all keys a good pressure point and are inserted through webs separated well from each other. Also, the fact that the keys about 50% larger than the Nokia N73 is expected to contribute to the somewhat coarser hands to come clear. Otherwise, one finds the familiar 5-way control, which now is at almost all cell phone standard.
When folded, can be found on display 3 buttons to cover the integrated music player to use. On the left side you will find a PTT (Push to Talk) button, but this short-range radio service I believe is offered by D1 only. To me that is a key user base will not function.
Right side, you have 2 big + / – buttons that serve the volume control.
Lt. Nokia offers the 6290 as one of the first phones using the Feature Pack 1, which should have an improved Web browser and improved Connectivityfunktionen.
Only gripe I have with any web browser. So far the browser through the 5-way keypad and 2 “mouse buttons” was controlled, on the one hand back to the menu or led many of the “Back” function could jump back a page. Nokia now has the “Back” function by “Stop” replaced me with the meaning of which is completely obscured. What should I do with your “stop” on a website? It has absolutely no function. I would like to but now just scroll back one page, one is forced to re-enter the entire homepage and click through to the desired position. I think it’s mega annoying.
Relatively funny is on the 6290, the fact that there are no open sockets. Thus, all approaches to the miniSD card, the charge jack, headphone jack and the USB connection through doors and hatches are closed, the one with a fingernail tips aufbekommt but easy.
Very unfavorable to the new arrangement now is that the battery cables are inserted from the top of the unit, as must the headset. In normal operation, this may not notice but no later than the car is a top leading cable out relatively unfavorable.
Also as Miss lungs can apply the key lock. Unfortunately, it does not logically, as in many folding phones automatically close the door, but as with all Nokia phones by pressing a combination of li. top and left. lower key (when open). to criticize particular note is the Tastenentsperrung as this example With the phone closed by the 2-3-button press on the cover and this is done silently as well in your pocket and you are scared, why suddenly starts the music player to play.
Connectivity
Here is one of the strengths of the Nokia 6230, as it can be thanks to mini-USB connector, infrared and Bluetooth on all major ways with the home PC and as synchronize with Outlook.
I personally. use for example the mobile phone in conjunction with my laptop as BASE – UMTS data modem. The connection I make with the included USB cable and PC Suite in seconds. Unlike the previous Pop-Port connections for Nokia phones, which attracted attention by frequent intermittent contact, it’s no longer with the MINI USB connector.
Furthermore, I use two navigation programs based on Symbian to navigate with the 6290th First, the TomTom 6 and the other Route 66 Mobile 7 Both programs run very fast and reliable, although the TomTom Nokia 6290 has not yet on the compatibility list. To navigate you need to have not only software but also a GPS receiver. I might as a Bluetooth GPS receiver is available, which is half the size of the mobile phone. After turning on the receiver and to activate the navigation software detects this after 10 seconds, the device immediately and shows my location. A nice feature. ?
And last but not least I would like to mention Bluetooth, because soon I build into my car a compatible A2DP hands free, which I can stream from my Nokia 6290 music and navigation prompts through your car stereo wirelessly. This was my bygone N73 not know what was for me the skin reason to switch. The only alternative of Nokia mobile phone based on Symbian is currently the N95, but which is prohibitive for me at the moment. Via infrared I can not say anything because I do not use this standard.
Of course there are also connections for the charger and a headset, which I do not want to forget. But what I hardly understand all the magazines and reviews rave about the new Nokia customer friendliness finally block to “normal” headphone jacks … but what is it customer-friendly when Nokia phone jacks installs of 2 mm, normal but still have 3.5. So you still need an adapter…. Or you can hear the music for example through the built-in stereo speakers, because of their size have even a slight bass and sound so very good and full. Similar to a small portable radio.
Phone / SMS / data function
Of course, it can also make calls with the device, which are important to me rather the “gimmicks” to 50%. In any event, as usual can make calls and send messages. All without specifics. I find it very pleasant, that the unit is well balanced in the hand and the person is to understand a little subdued. Also will, I think noise disappears as well as the current way TV or road noise.
You just have to watch out for the very low running time. To load the device I have every 30 hours as Bluetooth, UMTS / SMS and the frequent but very much on the battery suck. Just think as UMTS data modem must be in good time to insert the charging plug, otherwise you off again after 2 hours. Here I believe Sony Ericsson has better working example done with the K800i, which also could be loaded on the PC with the USB port. Because Nokia may still abgucken times. ;-)
Camera
Maybe there’s someone interested in from the previously concealed from me about the built-in 2-Magapixel camera but since one has to understand my attitude. I think either you built a really good camera, or can leave it. In 6290 I could have done without. The shutter is slow, the images are over / underexposed and mostly out of focus. A Sony Ericsson K750i with 2.0 megapixel makes compared to enchanting images of incredible sharpness.
Price
The price is 350 € according to Nokia but I actually always buy in certified online shops or on ebay and I’ve paid for the new device only 270 €. For the performance offered is very good I think.
Rating
The Nokia 6290 is all in all a very sophisticated device with many features and amenities. criticisms are right it does not really. Except perhaps a minor complaint to Nokia, the block always inferior materials. Thus, the black cell phone may look chic and Business Like from but the plastic is very fast and greasy fässt a little greasy in with time, are also at 3 weeks already identified the first scratches. Since Nokia has had more sense of past material look and feel. But I will forgive times …. yet.
Well it finally happened, I have purchased a Bluetooth music receiver and wanted to pair it with my Nokia 6290th Except for the pair and the recognize that a multimedia receiver is connected and everything works without problems but then nothing happened auh more. Actually thought ch, it was an application error but after I anschrieb Nokia I got the prompt response, the Nokia 6290 does not support the A2DP profile. What I find even more boldly, as I have Nokia anschrieb 3 weeks ago and asked if it also was capable of A2DP – which was confirmed to me. Since it is neither Nokia nor can trust the advertised product features, I will soon change back to Sony Ericsson and await with interest the P1i, which in the 3rd to start quarter of 2007.
Pros: Connectivity, handling, price, sound, program compatibility
Cons: camera, cheapest plastic surface, ineffective keypad, no A2DP
