In this report I will tell you in detail about my solid companion that now I was already almost 2 years, more reliable support. We are talking about my phone, the Nokia 3650 Actually it is rather a smart phone, which is unfortunately often omitted.

A smartphone has over a normal phone into a much higher level functionality, which is made possible through a special operating system with ever-new appearing, some strong applications. But more on that later.
My report is now the various relevant areas are well organized, so you can you pick out the parts that interest you easily.

Let us detail each of the following topics:

1. The acquisition

After my old Siemens ME45, which, incidentally, was also a convincing cell phone, outdated after 2 years of the contract was, and I wanted something new again, I went in search of a new, equipped with many advanced features device. I was especially important and a color display that much data can be especially SMS messages. After some searching on the internet, the Nokia 3650 in was short-listed. It pleased with especially because of the large color screen and MMC expandability, which provides for almost unlimited storage space (for mobile phone standards). Also I had read something about a Symbian operating system, which is designed to provide high functionality. The design spoke to me, quite apart from the really very weird arranged keyboard, rather to.
So I went as soon in the city for me to see the equipment up close and compare the prices. In the media market and another store, I could easily transfer the most significant, that is to press the buttons and in the second shop was even, and I was fine all through testing. I was excited, even the button layout was now not as bad as feared, the other features just totally convinced me.

Now only had to agree to the price. This proved not so easy because I did not want so much more time to spend on a cell phone as it was for my Siemens ($ 300!) – A maximum of 50 €. However, it cost around a minimum of 100 €, which for me was just too expensive and so I went first again, a little depressed, go home, hoping to find me on the Internet, such prices.

After several searches I finally found the offer for me. In Mobilcom a promotion had begun. Only 1 € to cost the phone with a contract D2 there! In addition, a connection fee would still add 29 €. This agreement (also called SMS 50 Power) costs 9.95 € per month and contains even 50 free SMS. Telefoniergebühren the other hand, are located more in the higher cost area is a cheap weekend rate is not natural. But that did not matter to me, anyway I just got a call with a mobile phone and SMS rather write. Such was this contract made for me and it was clear that I now have access. Said and done, so I drove back into town and went, this time in the small shop Mobilcom. After a short time served me a nice gentleman, he said I was lucky it was just one device there – of course I was relieved and happy at the same time. At once all the paperwork went through the stage and after a half-hour waiting period in which the phone is unlocked and my bank details have been checked I finally got the box with my new phone and was happy :-)

When I got home I set it equal to unpack the shiny new device and all be viewed. In the compact, sturdy cardboard box, with the usual Nokia typical pictures out is next to the phone, whose display is equipped with a protective film (as well as the camera lens), also the following:

-> A small travel charger to the Nokia standard connector
-> A detailed and illustrated instructions, really easy to understand
-> A MMC card with 16 MB unknown manufacturer
-> A Nokia battery with 3.7 volts (Model: BL-5C)
-> Advertising Material

Everything is packaged very well in foil or cardboard, so that nothing can go wrong and you have the feeling to get back to something solid.

2. The design
Here, some people may well look quite skeptical. (G 130 x 57 x 26 mm at 130) In addition to the rather large dimensions and weight, is an instantly the atypical arrangement on the keyboard. The mobile phone has received from many of the derogatory term “shower head” – not inappropriate as I think;)

The numbers (or letter) keys are in fact not as usual beautiful square circle next to and below one another but actually it side by side in a nearly complete. That means it is on the left above the 1 and then it goes with the 2 left further off, beautiful in a circle until it arrives at the upper right the 0. Top center of the circle is there a slightly larger cursor. So to explain quite complicated and I would recommend you just look at the attached image.

What is there to say maybe the design is that the overall impression I think it all fits together coherent. The display occupies a large area of the square, but the keys are also advised not to small – hence the rather large dimensions. On the back there is, quite inconspicuous, the camera lens. It recommended that the protective film can be as long as possible on it – it’s hardly noticeable and prevents scratches.

Beautiful I also think that there are no protruding antenna, and no rough edges are present.
Very positive, I must mention that this smartphone can withstand a lot. I heard it fall down very often, even on the hard asphalt – and from a height of pocket or chest. Well, and there were only a few scratches, the device still works, nothing is broken or the same. So the whole thing pretty stable, which really is something special!

3. Ergonomics

From this point, I would first address to the failed keyboard before I get to the software-user-friendliness.
Of course I did, I have trouble with the unconventional arrangement of the keys. I must say you have no other choice but to switch completely, at least if, as probably most people want to write SMS. It initially requires maximum concentration and patience to make the right buttons – most of all, when previously the normal arrangement was used to. Little by little you get the hang of it and it’s always easier on the hand. But I would say, the speed limit, as before, we hardly reach. Whether this is perhaps even me, I can not judge;) Overall, I am now quite satisfied and I manage to write fast enough. After a few weeks so it should fix any.

But there are also advantages of the keyboard circuit. So you can act in games, which you can install on this phone really huge amounts, fairly well – I would do my part, heavy with the standard arrangement. It is also very easy to dial a telephone number, because the numbers are arranged almost side by side.

An important aspect of a mobile phone is of course the operation of the integrated software, in this case a new mobile phone operating system called Symbian. But for more details in the next section. I can only say to the operation that it is really solved almost perfect. One has to move a cursor key with which one in four directions when you press this button, you can then call the appropriate function or start programs, etc. Very well then lifts and replaces the separate buttons, with a green and red telephone marked . Then there are 2 small quick-launch buttons that can demonstrate freely. The left has included a short delay time, right out the assigned function immediately. I left the camera and the right inbox.

In addition, other small buttons: A (c) for letters, numbers, or delete other things with a pressure to call a menu button to the Symbian menu and click on it with a pen to change the writing mode and the copy / paste function to activate. Finally, will not be missing the two hash and asterisk keys. It is a pity that there are no side button (as with many Siemens equipment available) to quickly adjust the volume or switching profile is.Overall I’m very confident of the operation – you can get involved in the keyboard, you are rewarded with a highly responsive user interface.

4. Symbian OS and Co

Now I want you to imagine in detail the integrated, specially developed for mobile operating system. It is called the Symbian OS and has enjoyed increasing popularity. Since its launch two years ago many users were able to learn what is possible with a small cell phone. In the meantime, however, the term “Smartphone” naturalized, which implies that a cell phone in front of him, which has its own user system with maximum flexibility. Moreover, even to include multimedia features like MP3 player, camera, camcorder, office functions, and of course games. , in contrast to normal mobile phones can simply do a lot more here – a large display with color is natural and allows use of high-quality applications.

This Symbian smartphone features in version 6.1. Of course this is no longer up to date now has been around Symbian 7 and soon 8, which again bring some improvements – such as holding the case. But of course you can work with the actual version as very good and use all the features. It is even so that the software is for this older version a lot more mature and there are no compatibility problems, as for new equipment where the programs have to be adjusted. So I’m on the 3650 so far, virtually all programs run brought – a high level of compatibility is guaranteed! But now you want to even know for sure exactly what you well then everything can be done with Symbian, and so it is great.

Now I want to start with the surface. The entire menu is completely different shape than it was accustomed to. If you press the Menu button will also immediately send the Symbian menu which consists of nothing but the small icons next to and include each other. Each icon also has its own small zB.Mitteilungen text, so you always know what is actually hidden behind a easy navigation. These icons can now easily be controlled through the above cursor keys – left – right – up and down, just as you like. With a push of the same key function will be triggered. In most cases these are programs. But also folders with subfolders that can be opened. And so I have reached the same for a comfortable feature of Symbian. Yes, you can create any folder in the main menu (it also re-sub-folder), rename this place freely. The same is true for all the icons – they can also be renamed, moved and placed anywhere in any folder. Very awesome in my opinion, so that is is a total freedom given. While I’m in the design – it even has a software which you can install with which it is possible to choose the icons free, as the background color, font, etc. of the menu – so here is one, as I said, a lot of freedom .

The default display, that is what one usually is when the menu or a program is not open, is displayed, also called desktop or standby mode. There is any background image was fixed about 3 / 4 of the screen then fills. In addition, you can clearly see the top left of the reception level and the top right of the battery level indicator. In the top center there is the so-called Logos, which arises whenever one has received, this is also easily interchangeable and have the form of banners. In addition, there is still next to a clock, either digital or analog. Bottom left and right you can see each with words with which the two freely configurable function keys (see above) demonstrates. Very good and clearly resolved the whole thing, I think.

With Symbian, you can, as already mentioned, start very much. It is as good as anything that can use what is, now more than 1,000 applications – but I would only list a few things that I’ve tried and really useful. Anything else would be beyond the scope. By the way, there are many pages about the programs on the Internet. A very good start, if you are not familiar with the matter are, the page www.Aikon.ch – there are regular program reviews also find tips and tricks like a very good forum – so check back as you pass by me, I’m often there .

But now the programs that are part of the way, even freeware, but only at the margins.

File Explorer:

A basic program is a File Explorer, similar to the Windows Explorer. This makes it possible for you to complete the data structure of the mobile phone to access and move the files freely, copy and view. Although you should look for something specific, you’re so fast on target. Such a program would be for example the “File Explorer” (freeware) or better yet the “Extended File Manager”.

Emulators
Probably the most ingenious feature, at least for gaming addicts, would surely be the ability to use console emulators. Yes, read it right here “It is now possible Game Boy, Game Boy Color, C64, NES to play, SNES and Sega Gamegear Lynx Roms on a Symbian phone. The best experience I have with Game Boy and NES games made that run really smooth. Man even has the iconic sound even equal to, plus you can always save whenever you want. is highly recommended Vboy which really delivers great results. The price of 10 € it is perfectly fine.
Of course, need to pay it, that it either owns the games themselves or their only free download ROMS invites – otherwise you make yourself liable to prosecution.

Games
On a very wide range you can return it at the games. There are a lot, it is safe for everyone. Whether car racing game, shooting game, exciting adventure games, strategy games or any type of puzzle and skill games. You get everything. Many have, for a cell phone, above average graphics, and then an even 3D is offered, one wonders whether one can not have a little PC in front of him – at least what I really amazed the often much what such a small part everything. Of course, even a lot of junk here, I must mention – but you can learn on the net comprehensive – there are a lot of reviews with text and image, and we must not buy a pig in a sack, now if at all, because much is also freeware.

Other applications

Task Manager, Torch program, answering machine, SMS counter, storage manager, Word, Excel, image viewer with editing functions, sound editing, comprehensive dictionary, encyclopedia, Mp3 Player, Extended Camcorder, ICQ, mail, EMule, PC control, and much more

You see, there are some really interesting – basically a small computer. The combination of mobile phones and PC is indeed getting stronger and this can be observed clearly dependent on Symbian!

Only briefly touch on, I would like to have the Java capability. This offer now so now almost all phones – just this. Java in my opinion perfectly complemented by Symbian, so you can draw on unlimited resources. Although I clearly have to say that Java, in contrast to Symbian rather lower performance applications, especially games you notice the clear. But Java also offers a wider range of applications, but also whether they are appropriate (in this case would be the famous alcohol test to name), is up to you.

5. Features
In this section I will discuss in detail the specific features offered by this text from the beginning and are not removable or the like.

SMS messages
Very successful is the implementation and management of SMS messages. Nor in any other cell phone I liked it so well as here. The following schedule for the releases:
-New message
Input
-My Folder
Email
Designs
-Posted
Output
Reports

This classification gives it two times, once for the internal memory and one for the memory card. But it should be the same switch on the memory card – so you get much more in :-)

In “new message” can be, how did you expect, a text message (but also MMS and e-mail) letters. This is very nicely done, you can actually write as much as you want, the SMS will then automatically divided when sending. For this purpose, there is a residual character display and in parentheses the number of SMS has now been shown what you write – perfect!

Course, this phone has T9 writing help that can be disabled too. This is done most easily via the stylus button which calls a special menu where you can set different writing modes. A very unusual feature, which offers almost no mobile phone and what is not in the manual is the ability to store text in a cache (like the PC mark, copy and paste) and then insert again somewhere. To do this, proceed as follows: Select text by holding down the pen button and move the cursor in the appropriate direction, then press the left soft key (there is also “copy”) – so the text is in memory.
Then you go to where you want to paste the text, the pen button has pressed again and presses the right soft key (is there “insert” as well) – and the text is added – class feature that I missed on other mobiles have often . Of course this is a cross-application. added installed So not only SMS, but also in notepad, calendar, contacts and task list, or similar applications to it.

In the entrance all the received SMS, but other files that you received via Bluetooth or infrared are stored. Each SMS is here in this overview, the sender wrote thick and small including the first words of each text message. If the file you see is just the Dateinamen.Nebendran it is still small icons that indicate whether it is SMS, MMS or other file. It may incidentally as many SMS, etc. are stored until the memory card is full.

I would also like to respond briefly to the mark still function. One can in an overview, as it exists here, that not only highlight all the files, but also quickly choose exactly what will be affected. For this purpose, keep to the pen button and move the cursor down. Try it out – works great. Selected files can now delete or move.

Another great thing is the communication feature “My Folder”. Here you can create any folder and archive the received files at will. Very nice, I have the SMS stored on the person in different folders. Then a separate folder for images, music, etc. I’m also that one sees in the same list as the number of files in a folder.

For Email you can create you an e-mail account and retrieve your emails via GPRS or HDSC. I have GMX is instituted – but never used it because it is too expensive and I do not really need.

In all designs will have you saved SMS started to type and write it later, or they end up there because the phone went out while writing (no more current, system crash, etc.). Very important feature!

Posted contains all the files (if you want it) which have been sent. Handy if you want to look up later or something. In contrast to the entrance of the capacity is limited to 999 messages. Of course you can also move individually or all at once or delete.

Finally, there are two, in my view, rather unnecessary, ranges and output reports. In the main the text is so long until it is shipped … it is because of reception problems stuck once, you can see here and it is then as there, “Re-send SMS at 14.45 Clock” – which means that the phone after 10 min. by himself again trying to send. Reports is completely unnecessary, here I had only two available times or something – it all went well for specific problems concerning the sending has looked after me now but not particularly the SMS came from anyway. Could find out so still not really, for what that’s actually good.

So you see, if only in communications, the mobile phone a lot to offer – particularly on clarity and ease of use was taken – in fact only one that offers so
Symbian mobile phone.

Phone book
The phone book has much to offer very much. Besides the possibility of a small picture to add each contact, which is shown at the call – you can add a great, almost as Potraitfoto. Especially great but is the ability to configure all data fields blank. Thus, if one would like, practically an address book, because you can address, phone number, e-mail, bank account, etc. Add Birthday completely flexible, just as you like. Better it gets! The memory that is dependent on availability of internal memory. So completely manageable variable. Of course, groups and persons dependent ringtones are possible.

Calendar

Beautiful calendar with all the necessary functions. There is a daily, weekly and monthly view. Of course, you can set dates, etc., which then marks also stand on the same day. When the time is there to request a reminder alarm. You can also jump by manual input on a specific day or are just comfortable to scroll using the cursor keys to scroll through the days, weeks or months.

Tasks

Here you can manage your appointments and tasks directly, divided into groups. One has again a summary list and can select individual data with the cursor and invoke a pressure.

Camera

As mentioned, the mobile phone has a built-in camera, which provides relatively detachable results. The maximum resolution is 640×480. The picture quality is fine. One must, of course, compromising – for more than a few snaps, it’s not enough. Too vague and unbalanced the image.
Here you can either activate the camera mode. You can see the current live image, which at slightly jerky motion and by pressing the cursor immediately, an image shot. If you press again, the image is already stored. So very easy and above all very fast. There are 3 modes: standard, portrait in and night. I used this but I almost never. Practical nor is the small display as many pictures one can make and the standby mode is activated after 30 seconds – otherwise there is nothing more to mention.

Photos
Here you can view the images and organize them into folders. As always, there is an overview and it is just held such as the inbox. – So very comfortable. The loading of the photographs could go a little fast. After all, you can zoom in 3 levels and rotate the image. Moreover, using the cursor key from one image to another zap. There are much better replacement programs you installed and then added quickly cycle through the pictures and can edit. This has already been integrated application only enough for necessities.

Video recording

The integrated camera can also record short video clips. If you have a newer firmware this is also possible with sound. It’s amazing what you can do with so nem small mobile phone. Unfortunately, the recording time to 90 KB (10 seconds) is limited. There are also programs that provide extra back an unlimited recording time. The recording format is RealOne.

Programs

Here are all the Java programs that are installed are listed and you can start it. Unfortunately, loading the list takes a long time, the more you install, the longer. Also a pity that you have the Java programs do not integrate into the Symbian. The Nokia 6600 with a newer Symbian version makes it better.

Games

Two games are already installed. SnakeEx, an enhanced version of the famous Snake and mixpix a kind of sliding puzzle. For starters, very nice, but if you know what it is for great games for this smartphone, and these are tried, then you do not need anymore. ;-)

6. Voice and sound quality

With the quality of the voices during a call I am very satisfied. You can also adjust volume using the cursor keys and they will do. So far, everyone understood me well and because of the relatively high degree is the micro and the shell also good on the mouth or ear.
The sound quality from the small Lautsrpecher comes when running an MP3 player or use the speakerphone function is obviously not very intelligent. For speaking’s it – no more, no less. Includes one pair of headphones to the sound is a little better, especially clear – but a real MP3 player you will not get here that goes by that fact alone not because the text is not stereo capability.
Overall though a good result!

7. Operating time

Here you can practice on one page critique. So much Fuktionsumfang course costs a lot of power. Longer than 1-2 days has a full battery if you use the device much – then it must be returned to the stripper. Positive but is the short loading time. After an hour the battery is full again – so is the relatively short operating time to get over a bit. Use one of few to normal, it has been my experience, sometimes 3 days, provided you turn it out at night. I think my record was by 4 days. One just needs to know what you want – it was clear from the outset that the unit is not very durable.

8. Service of the manufacturer

Right from the beginning I was positive in the eye that in every large city a Nokia shop there, to which one can go with his concerns and will also help nice (according to reports from the web).
I personally had the pleasure of the first 3 weeks. Because it has my phone for some reason shot – it could not get a call. So I went to the Nokia store and read me the new firmware play – after that it went happily back – has 19 € cost, that is fine I think.
So I can only speak positively about the service. I also have heard hardly anything negative.

9. Other

Here I would like to briefly mention a few things. For example, the data transfer. Somehow, the applications must indeed come to mobile phones or the images on the PC to the correct viewing. This is best used Bluetooth – this is fast and comfortable. On the PC you will need the BT to install the drive in a USB port. Then install the driver yet – the PC and the mobile “couple” and away you go. I’ve never had problems, except that the rate could be higher, but too large the files are not always so. Infrared I can not recommend so because, unlike Bluetooth always a line of sight between the transmitter and receiver must exist.
10. Conclusion

Now I’ve reached the end of my report and I hope you enjoyed it, and perhaps somewhat convinced. I wanted to refer primarily to the functionality of the device, which is often put up by the board. Although it is a very old text but still it has almost all functions of a modern instrument. Who is on an unusual design, here is also the right place – where can you get such such a round button layout? Quite a few people like something and those who can not do anything with, but was persuaded by Symbian etc., I recommend the Nokia 3650 even with just a keyboard layout, otherwise the same design or even the EBSS 6600 with a slightly more compact design and extended Symbian to look at.
I for one do not see me again to purchase a new phone – my contract runs out in July though, but I will continue to use this phone because it has simply convinced me thoroughly and I always faithful to the side.

Finally, here are the main pros and cons :
+ Large Display
Symbian And Java + surface – this extended to many functions
MMC + expansion
+ Good user experience
+ Very stable processing
+ Battery charged quickly
+ Fancy Design

- Right size
- Legal difficult
- Habituation needy keyboard
- A little slow on some functions
- Battery could last longer
- Sometimes, software failures

Pros : Symbian OS, a lot of flexible features, great menu, stable, large display
Cons : big, heavy, rather short battery life
